Risks & Side Effects

The simple fact is that Chiropractic Treatment is completely safe. Indeed the most recent research shows that visiting a Chiropractor is as safe as visiting your GP, and that manual treatment carries far less risk than anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen or aspirin. For this reason, Chiropractic treatment is today recommended in the Departments of Health's 'Musculoskeletal Services Framework'.

After initial treatment patients often report an instant improvement in their range of motion, (ability to move more freely). Because this extra joint movement brings into play muscles and tissues that have been underused whilst the joints have been restricted, this can sometimes be followed by feeling uncomfortable and achey over the following day or so. You will be given 'homework', an individually tailored regime of stretches, movement and advice that you can do at home to combat any reaction like this, and to maximize the lasting effects of treatment.

Any form of healthcare is to a degree a learning curve with the individual patients body directing what can and can't be achieved, and at what speed. Our Chiropractors use their considerable experience and skill to tailor the most appropriate forms of treatment for every individual, and will then adapt and develop that treatment to get you better as quickly and effectively as possible. It is not uncommon therefore for symptoms to change and move during and after treatment. Very occasionally patients report feeling tired or even sometimes dizzy after treatment, and it is true to say than in a small number of cases, symptoms can be mildly irritated before getting better.

At The Chiropractic Clinic, we offer a 24 hour patient help line, for help and advice at any time......although a number of patients have called at 4 in the morning to reschedule appointments!......you know who you are!

The truth about the stroke risk.

Occasionally in the press someone states very publicly that Chiropractic treatment, or more specifically Chiropractic Manipulation of the neck is dangerous, and carries many risks to the patient. This is categorically untrue, and is usually based simply upon ignorance, or misrepresentation of research.

There have been many hundreds of million chiropractic treatments carried out in the UK and the plain fact is that there has never been a single stroke causally linked to a Chiropractic Neck manipulation, and there have certainly been no deaths. In fact statistically, Chiropractic neck manipulation is many, many times safer than taking non steroidal anti-inflammatories, (the usual GP route). The risks associated with taking anti-inflammatories are well documented, and indeed deemed significant enough to warrant the inclusion in every packet of an advisory sheet of paper explaining them to the patient. Chiropractic neck manipulation requires no such advisory note for the simple reason that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that it is in the least bit dangerous.

It is important to note that even those who, for whatever reason seek to surround Chiropractic with bad press, do not generally dispute this, they argue simply that there is little evidence to suggest that Chiropractic Manipulation of the Neck is effective, and therefore, however insignificant the risk may be, it is not worth it.

This too is incorrect. There is in fact very good scientific evidence (link to our very boring research page) to show that Chiropractic Manipulation of the joints can be used to alleviate many problems, particularly when based upon a good diagnosis, and accompanied with soft tissue work, rehabilitative exercises and good patient communication.

This is one of the reasons that NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance to the government on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health lists Chiropractic as an alternative to taking anti-inflammatories for patients suffering nerve, muscle and joint pain.

At The Chiropractic Clinic, that's why we practice in the way we do, because the evidence supports it. It is also why we receive hundreds of patient testimonials from satisfied, pain free patients who are in no doubt that Chiropractic neck treatment works!
